edit] Although the originator of this image has been tentative about the determination of the insect, there can be no doubt from its appearance that it does belong to the species Atlides halesus. It is the only species of this disctinctive genus recorded from the SW USA and it is also easily distinguished from other butterflies of the same genus from Mexico and Central America. The categorization under Atlides halesus is sound and this butterfly has definitely been identified.
