Size: Medium to large. Plumage: mostly black; feathers not fully water-proof resulting in birds standing for periods with wings spread for drying. Other details: slender, longish bills, laterally compressed with a strong hook; elongate bodies; long necks; wings short; tail wedge-shaped of varying length; legs set far back on body. Expert swimmers and divers.
