Comprehensive Description

provided by Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology
Zenaida auriculata (Des Murs)

Gunnar Hoy informs us that in December 1972, he found a nest of this dove containing an egg of the shiny cowbird in Oran, northern Salta, Argentina. This is the first time this species has been found to be victimized by the cowbird; it cannot be looked upon as anything but an accidental host choice, since pigeons are not suitable as fosterers for the parasite. The pigeon involved is of the subspecies Z. auriculata chrysauchenia; the parasite is the nominate race of Molothrus bonariensis.
