Description

Trees, often with a swollen, bottle-shaped trunk. Leaves alternate, entire or palmately lobed. Inflorescences usually of axillary panicles. Flowers bisexual or unisexual. Calyx petaloid. Petals 0.
Stamens united into a column with a head of 10-15 anthers. Ovary with 5 loculi. Stigma peltate or lobed. Fruit a woody follicle, dehiscing along one side when ripe.
Very similar to Sterculia and differing "in having seeds in compartments of the hairy honeycomb-like endocarp within the follicles" (Hortus Third, p. 176).
