Usually a dead mammal or bird which the mites attack and eat the maggots which would compete with the beetles eggs it will lay in the carcase. I placed it in a sunny position on my oil tank and it proceeded to clean itself but didn't try to flick off the other insects on its head.and after 10 minutes it flew off.
