The centre of the thallus and the long lobes have pale, blue-flecked soralia" [George Baron, in "Understanding Lichens"]. The thallus is the main body of the lichen, and the term "soralia" is explained below. This specimen was growing on a boulder on the upper part of the beach. The soralia are the darker small round structures scattered over most of the lichen's surface, except for its edges; they allow the lichen to reproduce asexually. They are masses of soredia, which are loose powdery granules containing a few fungal and algal cells (i.e. both of the components that make up the lichen).
