Description: A legskate near the BOP at Mzia-2. In leg skates the 'leg' is the modified pelvic fin, which is divided into 2 distinct lobes in this family (Anacanthobatidae).
This is likely a Sinobatis or Anacanthobatis species accoring to elongated pointed snout, very slender tail and elongated low caudal fin. Anacanthobatis ori, a small species, is a likely species identification based on the plain brown colour, nasal curtains not overlapping the mouth corners, depth and known distribution (Mozambique). Although known from further south this observation from Tanzania is a new locality record. Item Type: Image Title: Legskate Copyright: SERPENT Species: Anacanthobatis ori Site: Indian -- Indian Ocean -- East Africa -- Mzia-2 Site Description: Seafloor Depth (m): 1618 Countries: East Africa -- Tanzania Rig: Deep Sea Metro I Project Partners: BG Group, Oceaneering ROV: Millennium 113 Deposited By: Dr Andrew Gates Deposited On: 11 September 2014

Description: This is a member of the family Anacanthobatidae (the classification is: Elasmobranchii (sharks and rays) > Rajiformes (Skates and rays) > Anacanthobatidae (Smooth skates))
It is probably the species Sinobatis borneensis, the Borneo leg skate. Members of this family are very thin, sometimes translucent.
The depth occurrence and location are right for this species - although the tail looks a bit too short relative to body length.
Max length recorded is : 39.9 cm TL male
Depth range recorded is: 800 - 1100 m
Western Pacific: South China Sea and Taiwan.
Distinguishing features: Disc thin. Snout broad and long with rostral filament. Eye small and remote from snout. Pelvic anterior lobe leg-like and completely separate from posterior lobe. Pelvic posterior lobe fused with tail. Tail slender.
This species was described in 1965

Description: The strongly triangular body shape, short tail, low number of thorns on the tail, absence of thorns on the disk, and eyes set far apart - are all consistent with Bathyraja richardsoni. Pale coloration is also right. Depth occurrence is OK. But, the most definitive character is the position of the pelvic fins. Very few skates have the pelvics situated wholly or nearly-wholly behind the disk. B. richardsoni is one that does - and so is the fish in this photo.
