Can be distinguished by the following combination of characters: anal fin with 6 branched rays, rarely 7; scales in a lateral series 42, rarely 40-41, or 43-45; 10-11 gill rakers in the first arch; a dark lateral stripe widens from approximately the pectoral fin origin to the dorsal fin origin, forming a slightly convex segment (Ref. 84762).

Inhabits Lake Zacapu which is fed by at least 12 large springs. The spring water is clean and supports dense vegetation. The rest of the lake has turbid water with less vegetation than the spring area (Ref. 84762).
