Pileus thick, compact, fleshy to spongj', dimidiate, sometimes imbricate, compressedungulate, 7-10 X 10-15 X 3-5 cm.; surface hirsute, ferruginous to fulvous, azonate, smooth ; margin -obtuse, velvety : context spongy-corky, somewhat fragile when dry, ferruginous to fulvous, blackening with ag^, 1-1.5 cm. thick ; tubes slender, about 1 cm. long, ferruginous within, mouths angular, 2-3 to a mm., ferruginous to bay, blackening with age, edges thin, very fragile, lacerate : spores broadly ovoid, smooth, thick-walled, deep-ferruginous, 2-guttulate, 5-6 X 7-8 /i. .
Type locality : Carniola.
Habitat : I^iving trunks of various deciduous trees. Distribution: Northern United States ; also in Furope.
