Indigenous to Hawaii and occurs elsewhere in the Pacific basin. This plant was growing in kipuka dominated by Lama (Diospyros sandwicensis), Aalii (Dodonaea viscosa), Alahee (Psydrax odoratum), Hala pepe (Pleomele hawaiiensis) and a few Ahakea (Bobea timonioides).
