This photo was taken during a search for Merodon larvae in bulbs of the geophyte Prospero autumnale. A loud high-pitched buzz gave away the location of this mating pair in the shade of an Euphorbia.The photo was used for the cover of the recently published 'Atlas of the Hoverflies of Greece': brill.com/view/title/33998Cover: www.flickr.com/photos/habropoda/49710772603This is a relatively common hoverfly on Lesvos, especially above 500 m altitude in the area of Agiasos.
