Description:
2010.08.01 N Neunkirchen - Rax (Pinus mugo shrublands, 1605 m AMSL where I stood when taking the photo; the trees on the horizon line however are growing at a height of 1700-1750 m AMSL).The so-called "Kampfwaldzone" on Rax mountain: you can still see Picea abies - but the scene is dominated by Pinus mugo. Just above 1750 m AMSL you won't usually find any Picea abies at all, and Pinus mugo populations get scarcer at a height of about 1900/2000 metres here (which, on Rax, is the peak region).
