Description: English: Hihi Zealandia Ecoreserve, Wellington Hihi were contained to just the Great Barrier Island by the early 1990's, due to mammalian predation, introduced by human settlers to New Zealand. Since then, ecosanctuaries like Zealandia have helped bring the Hihi back to the main New Zealand islands. Originally thought to be part of the honey-eater family, along with the Tui, Bellbird and several other New Zealand and Australian birds, the Hihi is now confirmed to be it's own family, and most closely related to the Wattlebird family (Saddlebacks, Huia, and Kokako).
