Description:

Description: butterballs, Eriogonum ovalifolium var. ovalifolium, Nevada, White Mountains, Montgomery Pass, Teels Marsh watershed, elevation 2242 m (7355 ft). This is the common yellow form of the species, found in the interior western United States from the northern Great Basin northward between the Rocky Mountains and the Cascade Range. It occurs on higher valley bottoms up to middle elevations in the mountains. Besides flower color, it differs from the similar and largely co-extensive var. purpureum in being more robust on average, with taller stems and more elongate leaves. Also visible in this image are pinyon rabbitbrust (Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus puberulus), inchtube phlox (Phlox stansburyi stansburyi), and singleleaf pinyon pine (Pinus monophylla).
