Leaf sheaths are loose and 4.5-9 mm wide; blades are 1-3 mm wide and open or rolled. Flowerheads are usually rather sparse open panicles to 30 cm long. Spikelets are 9-15 mm long and 1-flowered; glumes are larger than the lemma; lemma is densely hairy, narrow and elongate, with a 3-7 cm long, scythe-shaped awn. Flowers in response to rain, but mostly in spring. Found on a wide range of soil types, from sand to clays and alluvial flats to rocky hillslopes; usually well-drained soils with low fertility. Native biodiversity and can rapidly colonise bare areas. Seeds can damage fleece, skin and eyes (sheep are more susceptible); problem can be reduced by heavy grazing or slashing at early flowering (this may reduce persistence) or removing stock till seeds fall. Most productive in cooler months; small quantities can be produced after summer rain. Useful source of green forage over cooler months in native pastures. New growth is palatable and has good feed quality; mature growth is low quality; little use as a standing haystack. Grazing tolerant and declines with increasing fertility.
