These are caused by a gall mite species, Acalitus rudis. They are shown here on trees which stand alongside a cycle route: 1349561. On the upper surface of the leaf, the galls appear as pale bulges. On the underside, there is a creamy-white "erineum"; this appears like a powdery coating, but is really a dense mass of tiny hairs. For galls on willow trees in the same area, see: 1349565.
