(Genesis, 41:42-43) The image recalls the Roman emperors' triumphs, with Joseph dressed in imperial garb, with vexillum and diadem and riding in a quadriga, as Pharaoh's subjects perform proskynesis. The scene was probably reminiscent of the scenes from the Constantinople court of the emperors of the Macedonian dynasty Detail from a Greek manuscript dated 879-883 AD and containing the homilies of Gregory of Nazianzus, now in the National Library of France.
