BombinaBombinaCallingMale2
Description:
Description: English: A male of the Fire-bellied Toad (Bombina bombina) calling on a pond surface. Above the "normally" looking animal, in the middle is the phase prior to the formation of sounds: the body is distended like a balloon, in addition, the throat bubbles are inflated with air. Below is the moment of phonation: The inhaled air is compressed by muscle contraction from the throat bubbles above the glottis of the larynx to the lungs. Here, the toad's body serving as a resonance amplifier makes vibrations which are displayed on the water. Date: 25 April 2013. Source: Own work. Collage of three images.
