Fanna AKK Pisonia Forest

Image of grand devil's-claws

Description:

Description: English: A trail winding through a forest of Pisonia grandis on Fanna Island, Southwest Islands of Palau. Original field note: Pisonia grandis occupies most of the interior of this small, uninhabited island, rich in trees & seabirds. This forest type has largely disappeared from most Pacific islands, because Black Noddies & other seabirds prefer to nest in its branches, then their guano drops to the ground below, enhancing its fertility. Thus the first places on islands to be cleared are usually a spot near the landing and then further inside the atoll where the richest soil and most underground water can be found. Date: not specified. Source: http://www.pbif.org/WebGallery/Default.aspx?action=View&storedaction=SearchFiles&sortorder=Ascending&dirsortorder=Ascending&file=2368&search=Fanna. Author: Angela K.
