Object history: This is from a collection of drawings by Georg Forster purchased by Joseph Banks in August 1776 for 400 guineas.(Medway, 1976, p. 49; Dawson, 1958, p. 339). Inscriptions: Based on Lysaght 1959, p. 290 Signed "G.F.1773" "Anas assimilis Cape Good hope." Added by an unknown hand: "— S.N.XIII: 527. Lath. 519. n. 64. capensis Smith". Notes: This is one of the water-colour drawings made by Georg Forster during James Cook's second voyage to the Pacific in 1772-1775. The watercolour is listed by Sharpe 1906, p. 185 and by Lysaght 1959 p. 290 as Plate 75. This is the number written on the right-hand side of the watercolour. The NHM lists this watercolour as Plate 73. John Latham based his description of the "Cape widgeon" on this picture by Forster.(Latham, 1785, p. 519).
