White or Square-lipped Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum cottoni)

Image of Northern Square-lipped Rhinoceros

Description:

Description: English: White or Square-lipped Rhinoceros. The broad, square mouth, and especially the horny edge of the lower lip, facilitate the cropping of grass, its only food. In the picture at the left, this ridge, usually covered by the bulky snout, may be distinctly seen. The head of this species is much longer than that of the common black rhinoceros. From contact with vegetation near the ground, the anterior horn is worn off in front, and its base squarish. The variation in size and shape of horns is extensive. Date: 1920.
