I was lucky to spend almost an hour watching a pair foraging in the trees at Loodswaai in November. Assuming they were a breeding pair, hopefully their young will be around this weekend. The black-headed oriole forages up in the tops of trees, feeding on small fruit as well as large insects. Apparently the young are fed mostly with caterpillars and I wonder if they compete with Diederik cuckoos at all. Its voice is described as a liquid-sounding warble, accompanied by mimicry and whistles. It is certainly one of the most distinctive sounding and looking birds in our woodlands.
