Malva (Lavatera) assurgentiflora ssp. assurgentiflora (14036529055)

Image of mallow

Description:

Description: Photographed on the west end of San Miguel Island, California, this northern form of Island Tree Mallow differs significantly in flower markings from the southern islands form (ssp. glabra, see image I11-4301 in my San Clemente Island album) and slightly from the Anacapa Island form (see adjacent image ). May 6th 2006, image 044-021, scanned from Kodachrome slide. The species was formerly placed in Lavatera but is now considered to be in Malva (see The Jepson Manual, Edition 2). However, it is not clear that the subspecies galbra (from the Southern Islands) has been recognized taxonomically in Malva, leading to some nomenclatural difficulty. Date: 27 April 2014, 09:40.
