I thought it was dead, but when I retrieved it with a stick, it started flapping and carrying on. So, heroically, I sat him on the table, untangled the web and then tried to get the stick out of its mouth. Ha Ha Ha. It wasn't a stick, it was the spider, leaving two twisted legs hanging out.
