Description: English: Bacteria of the species /Bacillus subtilis/ were inoculated at the center of a dish with gelose containing nutrients. The bacteria start mass-migrating outwards about twelve hours after inoculation, forming dendrites which reach the border of the dish (diameter 90mm) within a few hours. Two days after inoculation the number of bacteria has increased so much that they diffuse light significantly and appear white. This picture was taken against a lightsource to make the dendrites (white branched structures) clearly stand out.Français : Des bactéries (Bacillus subtilis) déposées au centre d'une coupelle à la surface d'un gel contenant des nutriments, se mettent à migrer en masse vers l'extérieur environ douze heures après inoculation. Le bord de la coupelle (diamètre 90mm) est atteint en quelques heures. Environ un jour plus tard le nombre d'individus a augmenté au point de rendre les dendrites semi-opaques. Elles apparaissent blanches dans cette photographie à contre-jour.Deutsch: Bactérien (Bacillus subtilis) schwärmen circa zwölf Stunden nach Inokulation auf einem geeigneten Nährboden auswärts und erreichen den Rand der Schale (Durchmesser 90mm) innerhalb von wenigen Stunden. Ungefähr einen Tag darauf hat sich die Zahl der Individuen derart erhöht, dass die Schwarm-Dendriten milchig weiss erscheinen und sich in diesem Foto im Gegenlicht klar abzeichnen.
