Image of raccoons

Description:

Description: English: The northern raccoon (Procyon lotor) is known for its black mask across the eyes and bushy tail with four to 10 black rings. The mammal is nocturnal, but can be found in daylight hours in their nature habitat of large forests and moist woodland areas throughout most of the U.S. Raccoons are excellent climbers and swimmers and will eat insects, plants and small animals with their 40 teeth, including four long and sharp canine teeth. Over the decades they have also moved into human neighborhoods scavenging in garbage cans and living in garages and attics. Their forepaws resemble slender human hands with five nimble fingers making it easy to open doors, untie knots and open jars. This raccoon was on display at the San Diego Wild Animal Park in San Diego, Calif. The Southern California park changed its name in 2010 to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Photo taken August 24, 1993.
