Nodes are often shortly hairy. Leaves are blue green with a white mid vein, turning purplish-red at maturity. Flowerheads are digitate to subdigitate, consisting of 2-3 erect, silky, reddish-brown branches (racemes). Spikelets are paired and both alike, 4-5 mm long, 2-flowered and 1-awned. Flowers most of the year. In drier areas it is found in moist sites such as flats, along creeks and on cracking clays. On the Tablelands it is found on roadsides and in quite dry paddocks. It has moderate drought tolerance; low frost tolerance. Native biodiversity. Is palatable and has moderate feed quality when young, deteriorating with maturity. Provides good growth after summer rains and responds to improved fertility. Decreases under moderate to high set stocking rates and is thought to have been grazed out in many areas; persists better where there is no grazing or under low or intermittent grazing. Rest stands during wet summers to aid establishment as seedlings have poor survival unless conditions remain moist for an extended period. Date: 31 January 2015, 08:55.
