Description:

Lasioglossum vierecki, female. Photograph by Cole Cheng THE GOLDEN SAND BEE. Starring Lasioglossum vierecki. This species is only common where there is sand. No sand. No GOLDEN SAND BEE. Is it the sand or is it the plants that live in sand that attracts this bee? If it were bigger (perhaps the size of a cat) it would definitely be deemed sacred and worshiped, but, no it is about as tiny as a bee gets, but a few mm, so its worship potential is quite limited. As an aside I do have to say that when I see one under the microscope and pause for just a second more than necessary to allow my mind's worship center a small bow.
