Native to tropical Asia and found growing wild in mangrove forests. The dense leaves and colorful pinkish-red shades from young shoots and pyramid-shaped canopy makes it a choice plant for narrow avenue planting; also planted along waterways, parks and home gardens. Plant is commonly grown as a hedge and provide extensive landscape when sculptured into nice topiaries. It is a small tree but rarely grown to be one. It can adapt to hard pruning and with each pruning, new shoots are colored - yellow, orange or maroon - depending on the subspecies. If left to become a tree it will flowers. The flowers appear in cluster and like powderpuff. The red-leaved Syzygium spp. has red flower clusters while the yellow species has whitish powderpuff flowers.
