A monotypic taxon native of Eastern Asia (Japan - Ryukyu Islands), Asia tropical (Indian Subcontinent: India; Sri Lanka, Indo-China: Cambodia; Laos; Myanmar; Thailand; Vietnam, Malesia region and Australasia (Northern Territory, Queensland). Nypa fruticans, the Nipa palm, has a horizontal trunk that grows beneath the ground and only the leaves and flower stalk grow upwards above the surface.
