Because new kapa (tapa) has a strange smell, scented plants such as maile and iliahi (sandalwood) were stored in large calabashes with the kapa used for clothing and bedding. All parts of maile were used in steam baths to rid body odor.Today, maile is still used in lei making and given to individuals for special occasions such as graduations, weddings, and anniversaries.Polynesian Names: Gau (Samoa), Lau maile (Samoa), Lava (Samoa), Maile (Futuna, Hawaii, Niue, Tonga, Uvea), Maire (Cook Islands, Society Islands, Tuamotus), Mehe (Marquesas), Meie (Marquesas)EtymologyThe generic name Alyxia is from the Greek alyktos, to be shunned. The specific epithet stellata is Latin for star-shaped or covered [studded] with stars.NPH00009nativeplants.hawaii.edu/plant/view/Alyxia_stellata
