Description:

Mohoidae (Hawaiian Honeyeaters)Oahu, unspecified locationFormerly placed in the Meliphagidae (Honeyeaters), the newly formed Mohoidae is a bird family endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, but sadly all the members are now extinct. The late Alan C. Ziegler (1926-2003), zoologist, identified these few priceless bones for me in 1992 with his notes. Now identified as Chaetoptila angustipluma.Family members include:Chaetoptila angustipluma, Kioea (historically Hawaii Island; subfossil Oahu, Maui, and possibly Molokai), extinctwww.flickr.com/photos/biodivlibrary/8464082653/in/photoli...Moho apicalis, Oahu (Oahu), extinctwww.flickr.com/photos/biodivlibrary/8465179472/in/photoli...Moho bishopi, Bishop's (Molokai, Maui?), extinctwww.flickr.com/photos/biodivlibrary/8465180312/in/photoli...Moho braccatus, Kauai (Kauai), extinctwww.flickr.com/photos/biodivlibrary/8464081067/in/photoli...Moho nobilis, Hawaii (Hawaii Island), extinctwww.flickr.com/photos/biodivlibrary/8465180020/in/photoli...And yeah, admittedly not the most striking of photos posted. But, this is an important part of the ancient natural history of the Hawaiian Islands that needs to be shared with all.
