This genus includes large amoebae (up to 400 microns) with many pseudopodia that point in the direction of locomotion; cytoplasmic streaming frequently involves several pseudopodia at the same time. In his original description, Schaeffer commented that amoebae resemble a human hand with fingers spread out. Posterior often with a fascicle of pseudopodial remnants. Cytoplasm commonly with numerous bipyramidal and/or plate like crystals, some as paired bodies or clusters. Single nucleus, flexible and easily distorted but generally ovoid or cup-shaped. Nucleolar granules dispersed in nucleus or as large, lobed parietal band. Some species form cysts. Type species: P. dubium (Schaeffer, 1916).

Polychaos ist eine Gattung unbeschalter, amöboider Einzeller aus der Gruppe der Euamoebida.

Merkmale

Die Arten der Gattung können sich aktiv fortbewegen, sie sind dabei meist polypodial, bilden also viele Scheinfüßchen (Pseudopodien) zur Bewegung aus, nur gelegentlich monopodial, dann mit einem knollenförmigen Uroid. Der hintere Teil der Zelle ist oft durch gebündelte, verwachsene Pseudopodienreste gekennzeichnet.[1]

Die Zellen sind in der Regel 50 bis 400 Mikrometer lang. Der einzelne Zellkern ist kugel-, ei- oder becherförmig, häufig enthält er Körnchen. Das Zytoplasma enthält unregelmäßige, scheibenförmige oder bipyramidale Kristalle, manchmal als Paare oder Gruppen. Von einigen Arten sind Zysten bekannt.[1]

Verbreitung und Systematik

Alle Arten von Polychaos besiedeln Süßwasser. Typusart ist Polychaos dubium, die bei ihrer Erstbeschreibung 1916 ursprünglich zur Gattung Amoeba gestellt und 1926 dann in eine eigene Gattung gestellt wurde. Arten sind unter anderem: [1]

Polychaos is an amoeboid genus in the Amoebozoa group.[2] Several characters unite the species in this genus. The pseudopods meld at their bases when the organism is moving, and have dorsal, longitudinal ridges. The nucleus is oval or ellipsoid.[3]

Phylogenetic analysis has shown this that genus belongs to the family Hartmannellidae.[4]
