Acaulescent perennial; flowering branches 3^ dm. high, glabrous or sparingly glandular-hirsute above ; leaves trifoliolate ; petioles of the basal ones sparingly hirsute or glabrate ; middle leaflet sparingly hirsute, rhombic in outline, deeply twice-cleft and with oblong or ovate mucronate teeth, 2-6 cm. long ; lateral ones obliquely ovate, 2-cleft to near the base and then cleft and toothed as the middle one ; leaves of the flowering branches similar but smaller and the upper short-petiole d ; flowers and fruit as in the preceding.
Type locality : Northwest coast of America. Distribution : In woods, British Columbia and Washington.

Perennial, with a more or less branched rootstock ; flowering branches 4-5 dm. high, strongly hirsute with long divaricate hairs, 2-4-leaved ; petioles 5-20 cm. long, strongly hirsute; blades broadly cordate or reniform, hirsute on both sides, 5-10 cm. wide, 3-5lobed, with rounded ovate acutish or obtusish lobes, doubly crenate with rounded mucronate teeth ; leaves of the flowering branches short-petioled and smaller and with more acute lobes ; inflorescence a narrow panicle ; sepals whitish, oval-oblong, obtusish, the upper much larger, about 3 mm. long; the linear-subulate petals and stamens not twice as long; carpels oblong, acute, the larger 10-12 mm. long, the smaller about half that length.
Type locality : San Gregorio Creek, San Mateo County, California.
Distribution : Near the coast of middle California from Mendocino to San Mateo County.
