In this closeup view the red spots at the ocelli, the pendant gonads, the long manubrium can be clearly seen. The lateral diverticula are also visible on several radial canals.

Hydractinia laevispina growing as an extension to a small gastropod shell inhabited by the hermit crab Labidochirus splendescens. Collected from 60-100 m depth in the San Juan Channel, July 2010. The shell is to the bottom right and the extension which has grown beyond the shell is to the upper left. Total colony width about 2 cm. (Photo by: Dave Cowles )

This individual, captured off Sares Head in August 2014, is much greener than the other individuals shown. I am not certain if the green is an intrinsic color or if it comes from algae living on the exumbrella. Bell diameter is about 4 cm.
