It is a Euro-Asian and North American floral element and grows also in parts of north Africa. It loves nutrients poor ground of almost any kind and can be frequently found on disturbed land, path sides, bushlands and similar places. In Slovenia it is currently the only member of the genus Clinopodium. Its taxonomical history is quite picturesque as the list of the synonyms above proves. Historically it was a member of several other genera in the large family Lamiaceae (mint or deadnettle or sage family), which comprises about 250 genera with more than 7.000 species. Its taxonomy is not yet settled firmly. Nevertheless, in my country as well as in the whole Alpine region it can be easily recognized by many almost linear, distinctly fringed bracts (reduced leaves) at the base of each inflorescence (they can be seen on Fig.5 extreme lower right).
