Description: Malacothamnus hallii—Hall's bush mallow. Included in the CNPS Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants on list 1B.2 (rare, threatened, or endangered in CA and elsewhere). The species has spotty distribution from Contra Costa County to a bit beyond southern Santa Clara County. the plant is threatend by development in both counties. Note the filament column bearing both stamens and pistils. This is a feature of Malvaceae and a few other families of vascular plants. The petals are mauve to pink in natural light, not the near white they appear to be in this photograph under high magnification and studio lighting.
