Description: English: THE AMERICAN TOAD Bufo americanus Le Conte. Providence, R. I.] Figs. 1 and 3 represent male toads ; 2 and 4, females. Fig. 1. — So surprised by the suddenness with which they were removed from their respective places and set down before the camera, that they retain unnatural positions and subdued expressions for some minutes. The toad at the left just from its dark burrow (note small pupil) ; the one at the right from bright sunlight. Fig. 2. — Delicate coloration possessed just after moulting the skin. Fig. 3. — Coloration perhaps most often seen. Fig. 4. — Bright color often assumed by female when active on a warm, sunny day. Date: 1906.
