Stems are erect or ascending and to 1 m tall. Leaves are triangular, darker above, finely toothed and with scattered hairs on both sides. Flowerheads are compact clusters of blue-mauve to pink-mauve heads (6-8 mm wide), each with densely hairy bracts. Flowering is year-round. A native of Mexico, it is a garden escape that has become a common environmental weed of disturbed areas (e.g. stockyards, roadsides, riverbanks and cleared slopes). It grows in full sun to partial shade, on soils of moderate fertility and good moisture. An indicator of disturbance and poor ground cover; it is mostly an environmental weed and is not usually competitive with healthy pastures or native vegetation. Can cause internal haemorrhaging, dermatitis and death in cattle, but only if no other feed is available as it has low palatability for cattle. Moderately palatable and non-toxic to goats.
