Place: Lower Trenta valley, between villages Soa and Trenta, right bank of river Soa near Matev farm house, Trenta 1, East Julian Alps, Posoje, Slovenia EC Comment: The Argynnis paphia is one of Slovenian largest and most beautiful butterflies. Male and female are slightly different, but easy to be distinguished. The male is usually more colorful and has 4 prominent horizontal blackish streaks on its forewings. These are androconial scales, from which pheromones are released during the courtship flight. After hatching the young caterpillars first eat their egg-shells, then become very picky in their food. They eat almost exclusively dog violets Viola riviniana. It is interesting that the female butterflies do not deposit their eggs directly on this plant, so vital for their offspring, but mostly in bark crevices of older trees. However, the parents choose the trees, which grow near Viola riviniana. The youngsters must look for the food by themselves.
