The marine splash midge Telmatogeton japonicus originally occurs in Australasia and along the east coast of America. This species reached Europe through transportation in ballast water of ships. It was observed for the first time in Belgian waters in 2005, on buoys in front of the coast. Apparently these chironomids (and their larvae) survive on such metal ‘islands’ at sea. The species can be found in our neighbouring countries under the same conditions.

Telmatogeton japonicus is een soort dansmug die oorspronkelijk enkel voorkwam in Australazië en langs de Amerikaanse oostkust. Transport via ballastwater in schepen bracht de soort naar Europa. Deze exoot werd pas in 2005 voor de eerste keer in Belgische wateren waargenomen, op boeien voor de kust. Blijkbaar kunnen deze dansmuggen (en hun larven) overleven op dergelijke begroeide metalen eilanden in zee. Ook in onze buurlanden is de soort in dezelfde omstandigheden aan te treffen.
