Robust perennial herb of aquatic or marshy situations. Leaves opposite, entire. Inflorescence of elongate spikes, terminal on main stem and branches. Bracts persistent, hyaline. Perianth segments 5; upper tepal longest and narrowest. Pseudostaminodes present. Ovary with a single pendulous ovule. Capsule thin-walled.
