Robust aquatic perennial, up to 2.5 m, growing from a thick creeping rhizome. Leaves long and strap-shaped; flowering stems with characteristic terminal inflorescences; sexes separate. Male flowers a more slender spike above the densely packed, minute female flowers. Male part short-lived, female part turning deep velvety brown.

Typha capensis

Typha capensis is an aquatic plant known from southern and eastern Africa as far north as Uganda.[3] It has also been reported from Brazil.[4]

The rhizomes of Typha capensis are used medicinally in southern Africa. It is reported to improve circulation and to enhance male libido and performance.[5]
