Description of Metadevescovina

provided by BioPedia
Devescovinids with a stout body (9.5-90 µm) in comparison to Devescovina, from which it is distinguished with difficulty (this genus has been put in synonymy with Devescovina by GrassÚ [1952a]). It bears three anterior free flagella and a trailing one, cord-like or occasionally ribbon-like, as long as the body. Cresta variable in length (4-24 µm). Parabasal body spiraled around the axostyle (1-7 turns), occasionally branched. Axostyle stout with a marked posterior projection and a capitulum with membranous extensions around the nucleus. They occur only in Kalotermitidae except for one species in Mastotermes darwiniensis. Among the 16 species described, M. debilis lives in Marginitermes (formerly Kalotermes) hubbardi (Kirby, 1945b). Light microscopy and diagnosis in Kirby (1945b). No ultrastructural study. Type species: M. debilis Light 1926.
