They are native to Poland, Algeria, Albania, Italy, Tunisia, Lithuania, China, Finland, Yugoslavia, United Kingdom, Turkey, Ukraine, Estonia, Moldova, Spain, Georgia, Ireland, Germany, Iraq, Bulgaria, Morocco, Switzerland, Latvia, Austria, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, France, Azerbaijan, Denmark, Russia, Romania, Iran, Norway, Sweden, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Portugal, Belarus, Greece, Syria, Hungary, and Belgium. They have simple, broad leaves. Individuals can grow to 3.5 m.
