Coralliophila violacea, common name : the violet coral shell, is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Muricidae, the murex snails or rock snails.[1]

Description

The shell size varies between 17 and 47 millimetres (0.67 and 1.85 in).

Distribution

This species is distributed in the Red Sea and in the Indian Ocean along Aldabra, Chagos, Kenya, Madagascar and Tanzania, in the Indo-Pacific and along the Galapagos Islands

Small, bulbous shell, up to 4 cm, generally covered with a calcareous deposit. Body whorl with numerous fine, spiral lines. Operculum present. Exterior dirty white, aperture usually violet. Habitat: colonial on coral. Distribution: Indo-Pacific. N.B. at least six similar species of varying shell length. (Richmond, 1997).
