Blackfin Hogfish

Adults usually with a large black blotch on the back, extending along the lower lobe of the tail fin to the black ventral fins, but reduced to a small patch in large males (Ref. 48636). Often misidentified as Bodianus hirsutus (synonym of Bodianus macrourus (Lacepede, 1801) (Ref. 54980).

Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205).

Occurs inshore (Ref. 75154).

Adults inhabit clear lagoon and seaward reefs (Ref. 1602), on slopes or along upper part of drop-offs (Ref. 48636). Feed mainly on benthic, hard-shelled, invertebrates such as mollusks and crustaceans (Ref. 9823). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205).

分布於西太平洋區，東到法屬玻利尼西亞，北至日本琉球與台灣，南至新加勒多尼亞海域等。台灣發現於東部、蘭嶼及綠島等地。

中型之隆頭魚，體色鮮艷，常被當作觀賞魚，亦可食用，延繩釣、一支釣較容易上鉤。

體長型，側扁。上下頜突出，前側具 4犬齒，上頜每側具一大圓犬齒。頰部與鰓蓋被鱗。D.XII, 10-11；A.III, 11-12； P.17；L.l.28-36； G.R.5+13；成魚腹鰭多少呈絲狀，尾鰭截形，成魚尾鰭上下緣延長；體上半部紅褐色，體下半部色淡；頭與體側具許多橙色縱紋；背鰭軟條黑色，且色帶向後下方延伸經尾柄至尾鰭下緣；背鰭第一至第三棘具黑斑；臀鰭具一弧狀黑帶；腹鰭黑色。以前所記載之斜帶狐鯛(/Bodianus macrurus/)為本種之誤鑑，其差異在於後者體側之黑帶為垂直寬帶，而非斜帶。

主要棲息於清澈的珊瑚礁湖和珊瑚礁向海面，深度範圍在3-100公尺之間。主要以殼很硬的底棲性無脊椎動物，例如軟體動物和甲殼類等為食。台灣四週的珊瑚礁區都十分常見。

Bodianus loxozonus, the blackfin hogfish, is a species of wrasse. It is found in the Western Pacific Ocean.
