Lower jaw of adults prominently projecting when mouth is closed. Lower half to three-fourths of inner pectoral axil with small scales. Centers of scales silvery pink to pale yellowish, the edges red; black of opercular membrane extending below opercular spine; naked part of pectoral axil black; outer half of spinous dorsal fin yellow to orange-yellow, lower half of remaining fins red, the leading edges white, sometimes with a black submarginal streak.Description: Characterized by body depth 2.3-2.6 in SL (Ref. 90102).

一般以一支釣及延繩釣的方法捕獲。魚肉白，但質地較爛，煮湯時肉易散開且多溶解油質，因此適合抹鹽油煎食用。唯須注意其內臟可能累積熱帶海魚毒。而它的鱗片及棘刺尖利，需小心刺傷。在水族館中也有人看上它鮮紅的體色，將它飼養做為觀賞魚。

體呈橢圓形或卵圓形，中等側扁。頭部具黏液囊，外露骨骼多有脊紋。眼大。口端位，斜裂；下頜骨前端外側有1對頜聯合齒；頜骨、鋤骨及腭骨均有絨毛狀群齒。前鰓蓋骨後下角無強棘；鰓蓋骨及下眼眶骨均有強弱不一的硬棘。體被大型櫛鱗；側線完全，側線鱗數29-30，側線至背鰭硬棘中間點之鱗片數2.5；胸鰭腋部，披一大片的小鱗片。背鰭連續，單一，硬棘部及軟條部間具深凹，具硬棘X-I，軟條14。臀鰭有硬棘

棲地

通常棲息在亞潮帶珊瑚礁平台的礁岩下方、珊瑚礁斜坡外緣和水道等，深度最少可達５０公尺深。夜行性的魚種，白天通常呈鬆散的聚集在洞穴中或附近，晚上則出來捕食浮游生物，例如螃蟹幼生等。

Identifikasie
Die vis word tot 30cm lank. Dit het silwerpienk skubbe met rooi rantjies wat dit ligrooi laat vertoon. Die eerste dorsale vin is geel terwyl die ander vinne rooi en wit rante het. Die vis leef in vlak water in aflandige koraal- en rotsriwwe in water wat 3 tot 30m diep is. Hulle skuil in klein groepies onder rotsoorhange bedags. Die vis vreet soöplankton snags.
Die vis kan maklik verwar word met die vlekoog-soldaat.

The blotcheye soldierfish (Myripristis berndti) is a species of soldierfish belonging to the family Holocentridae.
Description
Mixed-species aggregation of
Myripristis berndti
This species grows to a length of 30 centimetres (12 in) TL. The body is oval and laterally compressed and the scales are quite large. The basic colour is silvery pink to pale yellowish, with red scale margins. The opercular membrane is black. The dorsal fin is large and spiny, ranging from yellow to orange-yellow. The other fins are red with white edges. The eyes are large, as this fish is mainly nocturnal. The lower jaw protrudes beyond the upper jaw when mouth is closed. They usually aggregate in mixed-species and mainly feed on plankton. This fish is a target of commercial fisheries and can also be found in the aquarium trade.
Distribution and habitat
Myripristis berndti is widespread in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. This species can be found on tropical reefs hiding in caves or under ledges, at depths of from 1 to 50 metres (3.3 to 164.0 ft).

分布
本魚分布在印度太平洋海域，如南日本、夏威夷、社会群岛及印度洋珊瑚区以及台灣恒春等地的淺水區域。[2]
特徵
本魚之背鰭硬棘外緣為橙黃色，成魚的下顎比上顎要來的突出。鱗片較為平滑，前鰓蓋骨下無強棘，吻部較為短鈍。體長可達30公分。
生態
本魚棲息深度依地域不同而有所改變，如在日本本州、四國南部棲息較深的岩礁區裡，而在琉球群島則棲息在較淺的珊瑚礁水域。為夜行性魚類，喜躲在礁隙或洞穴中，以甲殼類為食。
經濟利用
食用魚，但肉質糜爛，一般煮湯為宜，其內臟有累積熱帶魚毒，避免食用這些部位。
