"Genus Leptopenus Moseley, 1881

Diagnosis. Solitary, discoidal, free. No wall, costae alternating in position with septa. Costae and septa united by simple synapticulae producing very porous, delicate corallum. Columella trabecular.

Type-species: Leptopenus discus Moseley, 1881, by subsequent designation [Wells, 1936]." Cairns 1982, p. 9.

Corallum extremely fragile and highly porous; costae composed of thin dentate ridges that extend far beyond the calice to form a delicate marginal shelf; septa rudimentary, composed primarily of a series if tall spines; synapticulae absent; columella spiny.
