In Lake Kyoga in or near water lily swamps (Ref. 49805). In Lake Victoria in shallow inshore waters over both sandy and rocky bottoms, and seasonally over muddy bottoms adjacent to extensive papyrus swamps (Ref. 9606). Predominantly insectivorous, feeding mainly on chironomid larvae (Ref. 12526), but also feeds on small organisms like Ostracoda, Hydracarina (Ref. 9606, 12526), Conchostraca (Ref. 12526) and Diaptomus (Ref. 9606). Crustaceans, gastropods, fish eggs and detritus are also taken (Ref. 9606). Males grow to larger size than females; breeds twice a year during rainy seasons; migrates up the river to spawn (Ref. 10608). Oviparous (Ref. 205).

Marcusenius victoriae és una espècie de peix pertanyent a la família dels mormírids i a l'ordre dels osteoglossiformes.[4][5]

Etimologia

Marcusenius fa referència a l'alemany Johann Marcusen[6] (el primer ictiòleg a estudiar els mormírids de forma sistemàtica),[7] mentre que l'epítet victoriae al·ludeix al llac Victòria.

Descripció

Fa 26 cm de llargària màxima.[8] Aleta anal del mascle més ampla que la de la femella.[9]

Reproducció

És ovípar[10] i migra riu amunt per a fresar.[9] Al llac Victòria, la femella és capaç de pondre entre 846 i 16.748 ous durant l'època reproductora.[11][12]

Alimentació

Es nodreix de larves d'insectes aquàtics (sobretot, de quironòmids i odonats), crustacis (ostràcodes i Diaptomus), gastròpodes, ous de peixos i detritus.[13][14]

Hàbitat i distribució geogràfica

És un peix d'aigua dolça, demersal, potamòdrom[9] i de clima tropical,[6] el qual viu a Àfrica:[15] les badies associades a rius[16] poc fondes i de fons sorrencs i rocallosos i, estacionalment també, els fons fangosos adjacents als extensos pantans de papirs[6] del Nil Blanc i dels llacs Victòria,[17][18][19] Kyoga,[20] Nabugabo[20] i Kwania[6] a Tanzània,[21][22] Kenya,[8][23] Ruanda[24][25] i Uganda.[15][26][27][3][6]

Estat de conservació

Les seues poblacions s'ha reduït un 50% en els 10 darrers anys a causa de la contaminació, els mètodes de pesca il·legals, la sobrepesca, la pèrdua dels aiguamolls a causa de l'expansió agrícola i la introducció d'espècies exòtiques.[20][28][16]

Observacions

És inofensiu per als humans,[6] el seu índex de vulnerabilitat és de baix a moderat (28 de 100)[29] i és parasitat per Rhabdochona i Spinitectus.[30][31]

The Victoria stonebasher (Marcusenius victoriae) is a species of ray-finned fish in the family Mormyridae. It is found in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. Its natural habitats are rivers, swamps, freshwater lakes, freshwater marshes, and inland deltas. It is threatened by habitat loss.

Etymology

The fish was not named after Queen Victoria but for Lake Victoria, from where the fish is found.[2]
